Studied in Cape Town, South Africa and mathematics at Cambridge. During WWII worked on optical design of military instruments. In 1956 in charge of Royal Greenwich Observatory at Herstmonceux. Supervised completion of Isaac Newton telescope. Knighted in 1971.
