Studied chemistry at Leeds University, PhD at Cambridge. Research concerned with gaseous reactions and photochemistry. Awarded 1967 Nobel Prize for chemistry for work on flash photolysis. Knighted in 1972, admitted to Order of Merit in 1989 and made life peer in 1990.
