Studied at Royal of Music. Gained recognition with his oratorio A Child of our Time (1941). Imprisoned during WWII for 3 months for being conscientious objector. Works included operas, symphonies, a piano concerto and piano sonatas. Knighted in 1966. Awarded Order of Merit in 1983.
