Educated at Glasgow University, took degree in medicine. Moved to London. First novels were Roderick Random (1748) and Peregrine Pickle (1751). Imprisoned for libel in 1760. Wrote History of England (3 volumes, 1757-58). Travelled abroad for health reasons writing Travels in France and Italy (1766).
