Studied at Imperial College, London. During WWII worked on atomic bomb project with National Research Council of Canada. Co-authored pioneering textbook Advanced Inorganic Chemistry (1962). Elected FRS in 1965, knighted in 1976 and shared Nobel Prize for chemistry in 1973.
