Soane was one of the most notable British architects of the late 18th and early 19th centuries, his most famous commissions including work on the Bank of England and Dulwich College Art Gallery (the design of which as the first purpose-built art gallery in Britain influenced the work of later architects working on similar projects). His style was developed during early training with George Dance and Henry Holland, and particularly in the Grand tour he undertook between 1777 and 1780, funded by the Royal Academy.
