First Coalition Government since WWII

Westminster, London The 11th of May 2010 AD

After several days of will-they-won’t-they speculation, and signs that the Liberal Democrat Party was seriously considering moving back in with its long-lost-love of the 1970s the Labour Party, all of a sudden a marriage was announced: David Cameron ’s Conservative Party was to work in a coalition with Nick Clegg ’s Lib-Dems.
If we exclude the far flimsier Lib-Lab Pact of 1977-1978, which was merely an agreement not to bring the government down, this is the first coalition government in Britain since Churchill’s , formed as the Nazis advanced through Belgium and the Netherlands. It is a sobering thought that the strange gestalt entity that is the British electorate may have seen the economic dangers facing the country now as akin to the threat of national annihilation in 1940, and engineered the conditions where inter-party cooperation was inevitable.
Who then in this government will be our Lord Beaverbrook ; Ernest Bevin ; Clement Attlee ; and Stafford Cripps? Will Vince Cable and George Osborne be remembered as the men who saved our finances as those predecessors saved us from invasion?
