The historic market town of Church Stretton is to be found in the South Shropshire hills on the border between England and Wales and is situated midway between Ludlow and Shrewsbury on the A49. It has the distinction of being the only town in the Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and because of its unique location it attracts visitors from all over who come here to both enjoy the town and its surroundings or to base themselves here whilst they explore the area. Church Stretton can trace its history back to Iron Age times as evidence of hill forts have been found in the area, farming has always been important to this market town, its charter as a market town being granted around 1214 and today markets are regularly held here every Thursday. The Church of St Lawrence still stands on its original site, dating back to Norman Times and is one of the original buildings from that period, in the 16th century a fire destroyed much of the town centre and today many of the buildings here what were rebuilt after the fire. Church Stretton has a charm and character rarely seen nowadays, it has a marvellous town centre with a wide range of local stores, it has managed to maintain that tricky balance between becoming an overcrowded tourist resort and a dormitory town and what you have here is a superb place to live with excellent facilities for the residents and tourist amongst some of the finest Shropshire countryside.
