Events in Houghton-Le-Spring | 10 Places to Stay
Houghton-le-Spring is a town in north-east England situated within the city of Sunderland and around six miles north east of Durham, lying between Newbottle and Hetton-le-Hole, now in the county of Tyne & Wear established in 1974.
The town is mentioned in the Boldon Buke in 1183 as ‘Hoctona’ and an ancient document dated 1220 describes the town as ‘Houghton Sprynges’. The name itself comes from Old English where ‘hoh’ means hill and ‘ton’ means town or settlement.
It was thought that the ‘le-Spring’ part of the name was added in 1311 when the village was owned by Albreda, widow of Lord Henry Spring, one of the Lords of but another more likely explanation is the medicinal springs, which flow from the surrounding limestone rocks. This would also fit with the other Roman town names in the area in which ‘le’ is meant as ‘in the’ such as in Chester-le-Street, Witton-le-Wear, Dalton-le-Dale and Hetton-le-Hole.
The parish church of St Michael and All Angels is of Norman origin and contains the tomb of Sir Bernard Gilpin, known as the Apostle of the North – perhaps inspiration for Anthony Gormley’s Angel of the North. Gilpin was Archdeacon of Durham, becoming rector of Houghton-le-Spring in 1557, which at the time was one of the largest parishes in England.
