Burrowbridge is a small attractive village on the banks of the Parrett River in the County of Somerset, and is home to just over five hundred people. It's surrounded by picturesque countryside in the heart of the Somerset Levels and has a fascinating history which reaches as far back as Neolithic and Roman times. The village is dominated by the impressive Burrow Mump which commands the skyline and is where the Saxon King of burnt cake fame, Alfred, took refuge when Viking Invaders arrived. The Mump saw further activity when Royalist troops came here during the bloody Civil War in 1645. Today will find the dramatic ruins of the Medieval St Michael's which stands on the site of an earlier Saxon church. There's an impressive Square tower, and arched window that once held stained glass now frames stunning views over Southlake Moor. Walkers are drawn to the village where riverside walks unveil ducks and swans, and a network of footpaths and cycle tracks are plentiful. There are a few shops for the everyday essential, a market which takes place monthly, and, if hunger strikes close to the bridge which spans the River Parrett is a welcoming pub serving a tasty bite and something a little stronger.
