Bridgend of Lintrathen is a hamlet and a parish 7 miles west of Kirriemuir in the district of Forfar, Angus. The hamlet lies 715 feet above sea-level on Meglam Water between the Grampian range and the valley of Strathmore. The river Isla borders on the south-east side forming two waterfalls, the Reekie Linn and Slugs of Achrannie. From Gaelic Bridgend of Lintrathen translates to ‘fast flowing water.’
The Parish Church dates from 1802, located in a scenic wooded area near the Loch. It is a small oblong Gothic Church remodelled and extended in 1858. Interesting sculptured stone with Celtic design, thought to be part of a cross, are seen beside the vestry door. The graveyards oldest headstone is dated 1610.
Loch of Lintrathen Nature Reserve is a picturesque stretch of water occupying a glacial basin set among the Braes of Angus. Trout, perch and pike are abundant in these waters ideal for fishing and attracting wildlife including otters and many species of birds.
There are many attractions nearby including the Meigle Sculptured Stone Museum, JM Barrie’s Birthplace in Kirriemuir, the Angus Folk Museum and the Piperdam Golf and Country House. There are hotels, self catering accommodation, b&b’s and campsites located in the area.
