Pen y Cae is a small Welsh town that can be easily confused with the Pen y Cae that is to be found in North East Wales, this Pen y Cae is however to be found close the River Tawe in the South Wales valleys. Located in the Brecon Beacons National Park the area is popular with walkers and hikers who come to enjoy the local scenery, one of the more popular walks starts on the Brecon Road and takes in a long sweeping ridge with an extensive cliff and is known as Fan Hir. Close by is Craig y Nos Country Park which is set in around 40 acres and was at one time part of Craig y Nos Castle, a stately home that is now run by the Brecon Beacons National Park that was formerly home to the world renowned operatic soloist Adelina Patti, she was born in Madrid in 1843 and moved here in 1878. To provide some indication of how good and important she was she could charge around £1000 per performance – and that was in 1886! Today the park offers a beautiful and peaceful location for those that enjoy a quiet stroll.
