Cove is a beautiful village on the Rosneath peninsula, Argyll and Bute, boasting some magnificent architec-ture, and panoramic views over the Firth of Clyde. Cove, and neighbouring village Kilcreggan, has traditionally been home for wealthy Glaswegians looking for holiday homes. The Firth Of Clyde drew Glaswegians in their droves, as a sun-hungry city took to the paddle steamers for a trip ‘doon the water’, stopping for ice cream and praying the rain will stay away. John McElroy was a wealthy Glaswegian developer who funded a great deal of the development that helped transform Cove. The Craig Alley Villa, designed by architects, John Baird and Alexander ‘Greek’ Thomson, was built for McElroy, and is one of over a dozen residences designed by Thomson. Though some of these larger houses have since been demolished, some of Thomson’s building’s still stand – including the aforementioned Craig Alley Villa, and the Knockderry Hotel. The Rosneath Peninsula is a fine place for Glasgow holidaymakers seeking some time by the seaside; Rosneath itself, around the other side of the peninsula from Cove and Kilcreggan, is home to the Rosneath Castle Caravan Park, with has fantastic views over the Gareloch and offers watersports and woodland walks. Cove makes an excellent base to discover the Clyde’s sea lochs from, with a trail that takes in the Gareloch, Loch Long, and Loch Fyne. And though the sea fishing has been in decline since the relatively halcyon days of the 1970s, there is still an abundance of mackerel in summer month’s. And the humble mackerel, as any sea-food lover will tell you, is the staple of the best barbecues.
