Leiston is a town in Suffolk, situated close to Sizewell, Thorpeness and Aldeburgh, about 2½ miles from the coast. Leiston Abbey lies northwest of the town. Its ruins date from 1363 and the site now houses a music school. During World War II, the RAF Leiston airbase sent fighter squadrons of the American 357th Fighter Group to fight the Luftwaffe. Annual Memorial Day events are held at the now largely disused site. Leiston has a number of leisure facilities including a leisure centre and parks - including a skatepark - plus a diverse range of restaurants, takeaways, cafes, and various shops on the High Street. St. Margaret's church was built in the 19th century to accommodate the growing population working at the Richard Garrett engineering works. It is housed on the site of the original 14th century church and has a medieval tower. The Leiston Film Theatre on the High Street is a half-timbered building with street front shops at its entrance. The Long Shop Museum on Main Street has exhibits on the Garrett story and the town’s history. Leiston is home to the Summerhill School, an alternative, independent boarding school that was founded in 1921 by A.S. Neill as a ‘free’ and democratic school movement
