Achnasheen lies at a junction between Skye and Gairloch. The village was historically an important drover stop for the cattle-trade in the Highlands on their way to the markets at Dingwall and Inverness. The ‘Old Drovers Road’ can be seen on the north-side of Loch Rosque at 100ft above the main road. Achnasheen translated from Gaelic means ‘field of storms’ this is probably an accurate description of the area during winter weather, as it sits at a height of 500ft at the foot of Ben Fionn, with little shelter in the wide valley of Strathbran. Achnasheen has a railway station, a post-office and shop and The Studio gallery and café. On the road to Lochcarron there is a hotel with bunkhouse; other accommodation includes a cottage and a B&B. The village is ideally located as a base for touring the Highlands; attractions include the glacial outwash deltas, known as the Achnasheen Terraces; formed 10,000 years ago when the movement of the ice cut into the stone and gravel leaving artificial-looking flat-topped terraces. There are beautiful beaches on the east and west coasts and various mountains nearby.
