The village of Ripley in Surrey lies on what was once the A3 trunk road from Portsmouth to London. Since the building of a bypass this road has been renamed the B2215. Ripley is only about six miles from Woking and provides easy access to the M25. The busy University city of Guildford is just seven miles away. The village green at Ripley is one of the oldest cricket grounds in the country. Cricket has been played on the Green for over 250 years. In 1802 the ground hosted a game between '22 Surrey men' and England. Some of the finest players in the game around the end of the 18th and beginning of the 19th century played on the Ripley Village Green in games such as this one. Another claim to fame for Ripley is that it is the birthplace of guitar legend Eric Clapton. The village was once an important coaching village on the route from Portsmouth to London and the picturesque High Street still shows the many signs of this former life. There are numerous Inns in the village, including The Anchor, The Jovial Sailor, The Saddlers Arms, The Seven Stars, The Ship and The Talbot Hotel. The bypass may have taken a lot of traffic away from Ripley but the village is still busy with local traffic.
