Caterham is really two towns in one, with the steep 'Church Hill' winding between the two parts.
The original settlement was near the location of iron-age forts close beside the Pilgrims' Way, on the ridge of the North Downs. This is Caterham on the Hill. The Normans built St Lawrence's Church here in 1095. Directly across the road is the picturesque Victorian Church of St Mary the Virgin. There are no less than four pubs in the little High Street and three more elsewhere in Caterham on the Hill. These have all been established many years and between them can boast many items of memorabilia, cosy open log fires and a warm welcome.
With the coming of the railway in 1856, came the development of Caterham Valley. Rich merchants, wanting to escape the dirty London air, started to build mansions along the Harestone Valley Road. Caterham School lies at the far end of this road. The Valley has many shops and the new 'Church Walk' pedestrian precinct lies just across 'Grand Parade' from the station. Caterham is the home of the sports car of the same name. The showroom is just a few steps from the station.
