Peacehaven sits atop the chalk cliffs overlooking the English Channel, 6 miles (10km) east of Brighton. Derided by Nikolaus Pevsner and other architectural critics as "a rash on the countryside"; "there is no worse in England" and "a little mans suburb". Yes! there are no lofty Victorian mansions, rows of Georgian Terraces or moated medieval manor houses. What these august gentlemen forget, or chose to forget, is that, it is of its time, at time of austerity. It was conceived by Charles Neville for, in the words of the time as having "homes fit for heroes" a place for those returning from the horrors of the Great War. Plots of land being available to build your own home, by 1924 there were just over 3000 people living in the new town. It was laid out in a grid plan a mile long and a half a mile deep (rather like a Roman town!). originally called New Anzac-on-Sea but was changed to Peacehaven after the disaster at Gallipoli. At each end of the town were tall, white stone pillars to mark the eastern and western boundaries, only the western one is still in situ. The prime meridian passes through Peacehaven and marked by a pillar surmounted by a globe near where the Greenwich Meridian crosses the coast. Today Peacehaven is a thriving town of over 13000, with all the facilities one would expect; a shopping centre; pubs, clubs and restaurants; four churches and four schools. Peacehaven has come a long way from that "rash on the countryside"!
