Events in Shipston-On-Stour | 10 Places to Stay
Lying close to the borders of Oxfordshire and Gloucestershire but actually in South Warwickshire is the town of Shipston on Stour, the town taking its name from Saxon times and is derived from the phrase “Sheep wash town”, the town for many years being a regionally important sheep market location.
Today though this small market town is perfectly located for those who wish to tour the region, Moreton in the Marsh and Broadway are relatively close by as is Stratford on Avon.
Shipston though with its picturesque main shopping street, is on a warm summery day, probably England at its best with its range of shops and goods, the pubs and restaurants a stroll around the town centre along some of its quaint streets and alleyways will be well rewarded. As you wander around you cannot help but appreciate the Georgian architecture that exists today and how wealthy this town once was – not that it isn’t still wealthy nowadays! One of the things you can’t avoid if you are in Shipston is its bridge over the river which dates back to 1280 and around which modern Shipston on Stour has grown. It is easy to appreciate why this village attracts so many people, its location in the rolling Warwickshire countryside, the proximity of both the canal and the river together with its village centre and ease of access makes this a top destination for many people.
