Princetown is a small town placed at the very centre of Dartmoor National Park in Devon, high on the craggy windswept Moorland that’s been inhabited since prehistoric times. Famed for it’s stark prison built to incarcerate prisoners from the Napoleonic War, the foreboding façade no longer houses an intriguing Museum that has fascinating exhibits to see, there’s also the High Moorland Visitor Centre which explains the history, wildlife, and culture of the area. This is though very much a working Category C Prison.
The dramatic countryside beckons to walkers, as the Two Moors Way which connects Dartmoor and Exmoor runs through the town. Explorers are happy as many treasures from times long past can be enjoyed, there are Dual Stone Rows, and the Prehistoric Settlement at Merrivale. If architecture on a grander scale is more for you, there is Tavistock Abbey, or how about Buckland Abbey which revisits the pages of history , once home to Cistercian Monks, and the intrepid Sir Francis Drake. There are interesting interactive displays and costumes, outside there’s enchanting walks, meadows and woodland, all set on the banks of the River Tavy. For tired feet why not rest a spell in the 13th Century Monks Guest House whilst enjoying a coffee.
