Latest reviews | Events in Bere Regis
Bere Regis is situated at the junction of the A31 and A35 trunk roads, half way between Poole and Dorchester. Bere Regis sits on gently undulating hills at the boundary between chalk downlands to the north and sandy heathlands to the south. The focus of the village is the Church of St John the Baptist, probably one of the most visited churches in Dorset thanks to its magnificent timber roof dating from c.1475. Bere Regis has known illustrious times and even royal patronage during its 1,000 years or more of history. The village itself was established in Saxon times but by the 13th century it had grown to achieve town status. In 1215 a charter for a market was granted by King John and this weekly market was still being held on Wednesdays until 1861. The growth from Saxon village to town status in the 13th century is possibly due to the importance of the annual fair on Woodbury Hill or the 16 visits to the manor by King John during his reign (1199-1216). The town is a fine example of an idyllic English town set in rural Dorset, complete with traditional thatched cottages with many fine walks available in the vicinity.
