18 miles (27k) to the northeast of Cheltenham, at the its northern edge, lies the town of Chipping Campden regarded by some as the best of all Cotswold towns. The town`s name is derived from the Saxon "Camperdene" meaning - valley with fields - and the Old English "Cepgnge" or Chipping meaning - Market. Chipping Campden was probably one of the most important wool markets in England in the medieval period, with the fine Cotswold wool being exported all over England and the European continent. This period of wealth has left Chipping Campden with many fine buildings; the Woolstaples Hall in the High Street built in 1340 and William Grevel`s house of 1380 the oldest in a row of fine buildings amongst them. Another benefactor to the town was Sir Baptist Hicks (the 1st Lord Campden) who`s own manor was destroyed during the Civil War in 1645 leaving only the lodges and gatehouse. He built a row of Almshouses - still occupied today - and the Market Hall of 1627. St.James Church in the north of the town is a fine example of a "Wool" church of the 15th century but much repaired and rebuilt, it contains many elaborate tombs and brasses of local wool merchants. In 1612 a contemporary of Hicks, Robert Dover, decided to bring together a number of minor festivals that took place in and around Chipping Campden around Whit-sun time into one large festival, with horse racing, hare coursing, wrestling and various athletic events taking place. These soon became known as the "Cotswold Olimpicks", although the games were stopped in the mid-19th century; they had become too violent - shin kicking with steel capped boots being popular, They have been revived and take place just after the Spring Bank Holiday. In 1902 C.R.Ashbee moved from London to Chipping Campden with 150 craftsman to set up a "Guild of Craftsmen" in the old silk mill in Sheep Street (now a museum) as part of the "Arts & Crafts" movement of the early twentieth century. In 1929 the Campden Trust was set up to restore many of the ancient buildings in the town, the High Street is now a designated Conservation area ensuring that this fine Cotswold town retains it`s character.
