The modern appearance of this East Hertfordshire town belies its history, as it was already well established by the time of its appearance in the Doomsday Book of 1086 (as Chestrehunt). Situated on the A10 London to Cambridge road, Cheshunt lies just to the West of the River Lee (or Lea) on which is Lee Valley Park, a large park providing recreation to those interested in water sports. The colourful and very floral Old Pond marks the traditional centre of the town, although to the west lies the historical Churchgate area which includes Bishops' College, St Mary's Church, Whit Hern Park and the 16th century Green Dragon Inn. A conservation area protects the historic parts of Cheshunt, including the buildings of Dewhurst Charity School (1640) and the nearby houses in Churchgate. It was here that the Cromwell family lived and the grandson of the Lord Protector lies buried in the churchyard. Cheshunt School is a Foundation Technology College. This college uses their specialist status to raise standards of achievement and the quality of learning in design, technology, science and maths. The town also has a business centre and a good out-of-town retail park, including one of the largest Marks and Spencers in Hertfordshire.
