A guide to Thurnham | 10 Places to Stay

| Events in Thurnham
Thurnham is a tiny, secluded hamlet set in idyllic countryside. And although it provides a perfect escape from the nine-to-five world, it's still only three miles north-east of Maidstone, with all of its facilities and visitor attractions. Thurnham, however, has sights of its own to explore. The peaceful ancient church of St Mary The Virgin is close to the Pilgrim's Way, the legendary path leading over the North Downs to Canterbury - immortalised by Chaucer in "The Canterbury Tales". A short distance north of the church are the ruins of the 12th Century Thurnham Castle, which affords sensational views over the Weald. The castle area - a favourite with archaeologists - now falls within the boundaries of White Horse Wood, Kent's newest country park, complete with 20,000 specially planted trees. Walking, cycling and horse-riding are all enjoyed around Thurnham, with plenty of bridleways for riders to follow. The nearest neighbours are Detling and Bearsted, a particularly scenic settlement with an ancient green and pond overlooked by oast houses and timber-framed cottages. Here, in the best village summer tradition, cricket matches are played on Sunday afternoons. Alfred Mynn, the acclaimed Victorian cricketer, was a regular. He's buried in St Mary's.
