Sittingbourne is an industrial town about eight miles east of Gillingham, off a creek in the Swale, a channel separating the Isle of Sheppey from mainland Kent. Sittingbourne has significant links with the history of the river barge. At the centre of the town's paved high street is the sculpture of a bronze bargeman. The Dolphin Yard Sailing Barge Museum is located on Milton Creek. Awaiting relocation, it is a museum about all aspects of sailing barges. To the west of the Dolphin Yard is the Sittingbourne & Kemsley Light Railway, a heritage railway that operates from Sittingbourne to the banks of The Swale. The Avenue Theatre on Sittingbourne’s Avenue of Remembrance is an 89-seater voluntary run theatre offering all round entertainment. Sittingbourne’s New Century Cinema can be found on the High Street which has a number of restaurants and pubs. Sittingbourne has a market on Fridays in the Forum Square car park. Central Park Greyhound Racing Stadium on the Eurolink development has racing every Thursday, Friday, Saturday and some Sundays throughout the year. The Sittingbourne Heritage Museum in East Street has a considerable number of local exhibits, and Doddington Place Gardens, set in ten acres in the grounds of an imposing Victorian mansion, are close by.
