The motto on Broadstairs' town crest - stella maris - means star of the sea, and it's an apt description. One of several seaside towns on the protruding coastline of the Isle of Thanet, Broadstairs has a warmer, prettier personality than Margate and Ramsgate, its larger neighbours on either side. Part of the appeal lies in the town's buildings, which range from Regency-style houses to small flint dwellings and fishermen's cottages. Visitors also enjoy exploring the pleasant streets and alleyways filled with intriguing little shops. But the big scenic dramas belong to the coast, where tall chalk cliffs tower over no less than seven bays and sandy beaches. Some holidaymakers enjoy the seclusion of Botany Bay and Louisa Bay, while surfers delight in Joss Bay, below North Foreland lighthouse. Stone Bay, with its steps leading down the cliff, is said to have inspired John Buchan's novel, "The Thirty-Nine Steps". The main Viking Bay, incorporating a small harbour, is full of activity, overlooked by The Pavilion and its gardens (the site of the town's former shipyard). The local sailing and fishing clubs take to the water here. Viking Bay is also at the heart of Broadstairs' annual Water Gala, a riot of traditional family fun including beach games, sand castle competitions and knobbly knees contests. Broadstairs, a popular TV and film location, has long inspired artists, composers and writers including Dickens, who spent whole summers here. He's remembered with a museum and a week-long Dickens Festival every June. The town's sea-faring history lives on through its smugglers' caves and tunnels, the York Gate archway built to protect the shipyard, and two forts dating back to Roman times when Thanet really was an island. Other attractions are Broadstairs' annual Folk Week and the Revolution skatepark and climbing centre in nearby St Peter's.
