Muswell Hill, a lovingly preserved Edwardian suburb in north London, has recently become a very desirable place to live, especially among creative professionals. It offers many bright and upbeat restaurants, cafés, bars and clubs, plus fascinating art and book stores. It also caters for its inhabitants' regular requirements, from a golf course, a Grade II-listed Odeon Cinema, boasting an excellent Art Deco interior, and a leisure centre with swimming pools, gym and dance studio, to the weekly farmers' market and a decent spread of shops and supermarkets in the Broadway and Fortis Green Road. At the junction of these streets stands the imposing landmark of St James' Church and its towering spire. Muswell Hill is also home to the country's biggest performing arts centre for children. Just a little further afield are several major attractions: the gigantic Wood Green shopping mall; the splendid Victoriana of Alexandra Palace complete with extensive parklands, boating lake and ice rink; the Bruce Castle museum and grounds in Tottenham; and the 70-acre Highgate Wood. Muswell Hill has been immortalised by local pop heroes The Kinks and also darkened by notoriety - first by serial killer Dennis Nilsen and more recently by the poisoning of resident ex-spy Alexander Litvinenko.
