It says a lot about Limehouse and its rising reputation that celebrity chef Gordon Ramsay opened his first gastro pub, The Narrow, here in 2007. Overlooking the Thames where it's joined by Regents Canal and the Grand Union Canal, The Narrow is a Grade II-listed building that was a Dock Master's house and then a regular local before Ramsey turned it into a culinary destination - and further endorsed this historic area of Docklands. It was already booming, with previously run-down riverside buildings replaced by luxury apartments and pricey warehouse conversions, although the inland areas have not fared so well. Limehouse, located on the Thames' north bank between Shadwell and the Isle of Dogs, has historically been a port and a centre for shipbuilding and its associated industries. The marina is still operational. At the heart of Limehouse is Narrow Street, following the bend in the river, where Ramsay's pub rubs shoulders with a splendid Georgian terrace and an old tavern beloved of Charles Dickens: he wrote about The Grapes, built in 1720, in "Our Mutual Friend", renaming it the Six Jolly Fellowships. Limehouse is also close to the great London attractions of Canary Wharf, Greenwich and the 02 Arena.
