Latest reviews | Events in Kennington
Kennington, situated in south London, not far from the Thames, is world-famous for the Oval cricket ground - now called Brit Oval. The ground is home to Surrey County Cricket Club although, in the past, it welcomed other sports, hosting the first FA Cup Final in 1872. The first national rugby matches were played here, too. Nowadays, the ground is open not just to spectators but to cricket fans working to improve their game. The Ken Barrington Cricket Centre offers coaching, net and bowling machine hire, and an equipment shop. Kennington has also built a reputation for exceptional fringe theatre. The White Bear Theatre Club specialises in developing new talent, while the Oval House Theatre presents exhibitions and other events in addition to plays. Pierce Brosnan started out his career at the Oval House. Kennington Park is popular among residents with attractive walks, a cafe and a striking memorial commemorating the 1940 bombing of an air-raid shelter in the park with the inscription: "History, despite its wrenching pain, cannot be unlived, but if faced with courage need not be lived again." Due to its central location, Kennington has plenty of shops, pubs, cafés and restaurants plus an excellent farmers' market.
