Situated just below Greenwich, Blackheath is a beautiful and well-to-do part of London, although the ancient common was once a wilderness of gorse and scrub, and a gathering point for activists such as those in the Peasants' Revolt of 1381. In the 18th Century, the road to Dover was rife with highwaymen. Today the green acres and ponds of the heath are well-tended and populated by people flying kites or walking across the grassland to All Saints Church, with its tall spire, or the shops, bars and restaurants of Blackheath Village - the location of some lovely Georgian terraces. Also noteworthy is The Paragon, a crescent of colonnaded houses on the edge of the heath. Blackheath has a proud sporting tradition, being the first place in England where golf was played, and the home of the country's oldest rugby club. Since the 1820s, cricketers have played on the heath, which is now the starting point for the London Marathon and also hosts bowls, tennis and children's donkey rides. Other local attractions include fairs, a farmers' market, an 1840s railway station, London's biggest annual fireworks display, and two music centres: Blackheath Halls and Blackheath Conservatoire of Music and the Arts.
