| 10 Places to Stay

Cong has long been on the tourist map as a location for the Oscar- winning John Wayne film, 'The Quiet Man'. However, the village is well worth seeing for its own idyllic beauty. Set on the shores of the lovely Lough Corrib on the dividing line between counties Mayo and Galway, Cong is a place where forests, caves and ancient ruins and monuments are overlooked by the towering Mount Gable, which in turn gives panoramic views over the Connemara mountains. Cong is popular for a wide range of outdoor activities, from golf, boating and riding to pot-holing and geological exploration. It's especially famous for world-class fishing, not only in Lough Corrib but in the clear waters of the many surrounding lakes, rivers and underground streams. This is perfect countryside for walking, cycling and climbing, acting as a gateway to magnificent mountain scenery and to Ireland's spectacular Atlantic coast. Time seems to stand still in Cong, not least around the atmospheric ruins of a 12th Century abbey and at the fairytale Ashford Castle, a former medieval castle now operating as a hotel set in breathtaking grounds at the water's edge. Film fans will meanwhile enjoy 'Quiet Man' tours and the nostalgic Quiet Man Cottage Museum.
