Stanton St. John is a village in Oxfordshire, located 5 miles from the centre of Oxford. The history of Stanton St. John is closely tied to the ownership of much of the parish by New College, one of Oxford University's oldest colleges. The village is about 2.5 miles south of an area of low lying land called Otmoor, which is being encouraged to re-flood, as it used to centuries ago, to produce one of Britain's largest inland bird sanctuaries. Stanton's main facilities include the Holford Centre, the village shop and post office, two inns; The Star and the Talk House and a cricket ground. It also has many varied local organisations and activities to enhance community life, mostly centred round The Holford Centre which began life as a school, set up by Lady Elizabeth Holford, widow of Sir William Holford, in 1720. She was the daughter of a coachman of Stanton St John, and the memory of her humble childhood origins resulted in the endowment of a Charity School for “teaching of the poor children.” The village church in Stanton St. John is St. John the Baptist. Opposite the church lies a house once occupied by John White, a founder member of the American state of Massachusetts.
