The village of Ketton lies in the rural county of Rutland in the East Midlands of England. It is located about three miles west of Stamford, which is in Lincolnshire. It is one of the largest settlements in Rutland; after Oakham, Uppingham and Cottesmore. The modern village of Ketton was made from the merger of what were once the three villages of Ketton, Aldgate and Geeston. From 1894 to 1974 the Ketton Rural District existed, covering the eastern part of Rutland. Ketton Stone is a form of limestone and is quarried locally. It is used in many buildings in the village as well as elsewhere. Some of the former quarrying areas are now listed as Sites of Special Scientific Interest. The limestone is used in the production of cement. Ketton Portland Cement opened in 1928; the plant currently meets more than one tenth of the UK demand for cement. The magnificent parish Church of St Mary is over 800 years old and is one of the village's most outstanding features, with its impressive spire dominating the local skyline. Pubs in the village are the Railway Inn and The Northwick Arms; there are also two social clubs The Ketton Club and The Sports Club.
