Good Points: Everything was fine and, given the cost, better than expected General review: Only an overnight stay at somewhere near Didcot, where my friend had to be the following day, but should I wish to stay in the area again, that would be my first choice.

My husband and I recently stayed at the George Hotel. Upon arriving we were greeted by Joe an employee of David and Margaret who are the current owners, he was very friendly and helpful and showed us up to the room that we had booked. Our stay was in room No. 8 and we found this room to be full of character, clean and well presented for the age of the building with all amenities on hand. We had our meal in the bar that evening, both my husband and myself ordering steak. The steak was cooked to perfection and the service was excellent. Later on that evening we were joined in the bar by David the owner who had a chat with us and filled us in about the village and told us of places of interest. Our stay was most enjoyable and we were very pleased that we had chose the George to stay in and we will be returning in the not too distant future and would definitely recommend the George.

Good Points: Character of building, quietness and beauty of location, parking on site, friendliness of staff, beautiful breakfast room. Bad Points: Menu very limited, due, we understand to imminent change of management, and the evening meal produced (lasagne) was of poor quality, seemed to have been overdone in a microwave. It is not possible to open the window in bedroom (we were in room 2) and this was very unsatisfactory, and we would certainly enquire about this before making a future booking. A telephone number on the website would be appreciated. General review: We really liked the hotel but as guests we wished we had been offered the choice of having our evening meal in the lovely breakfast room, which we did not know existed till the morning, instead of the bar. Overall, a pleasant stay, and we felt we made a good choice and would certainly return.

Good Points: The old fashioned, coaching type inn experience of the place. Bad Points: The Bar was completely empty all evening (on a Saturday Night). We were advised to eat else where, and not having any custom in a local bar gave the impression that the bar was not a good place to socialise. General review: It would have been handy to know that you had to pay an extra £5.50 per head for an English Breakfast. The continental breakfast really was not up to scratch. It consisted of two types of cheap cheese, toast, cereals and very little else.

This review is only about the cuisine. My family and together with friends, numbering 8 in total, had Sunday lunch at the George. We are regular restaurant goers therefore we do know good food and service from bad, and the George scored badly on both fronts. Service from an Australian waitress who wore a permanent frown, was not at all interested in serving us, was abysmal. She knew nothing about the menu, nor was she bothered to ask anyone, did not ask us if we wanted starters, was inattentive, did not bother to ask us if we wanted dessert - we gave up in the end, and even didnd't bother with bringing the bill - we had to go and get it ourselves. Needless to say we did not leave a tip. The roast was grisly with too much fat, was lifeless even though it was not overcooked. The potatoes and vegetables completely lacked any flavour in them. The Diet cokes were flat and we had them changed. We didnt come up from London for the fine cuisine, we came to see a beautiful village and surrounding area, but neither did we expect, this base level of cuisine and accompanying service - never again

We visited for lunch having had many excellent meals here in the past. The food was reasonable though not as good as before but the behaviour of the staff amazed us. At one point, they all left the restaurant to go to the lobby where one of the waiters lowered his trousers and demonstrated the large hole in his boxer shorts. This caused much amusement to all the staff. He explained that he couldn't change them as he had no clean ones! The atmosphere was not improved by the piped radio, slightly off tune which blared out. We asked to move tables and explained why. The reply was that it is always on. Eventually it was turned down it a bit but for a smart pub, it was not appropriate. No one seemed to be in charge, hence the poor behaviour. We won't be returning, but what a shame to see such a good pub treated like this.

Good Points: charming old inn Bad Points: room overlooking main street, very noisy (hot so windows open), church clock but got used to that, neighbouring room had tv loud until 1 am when duty manager entered room and turned it off! we never did find out who was in there. General Review: if i stayed again i would request a room which is not at the front of the hotel overlooking the street

Good Points: Large car park. Bad Points: Shower, lack of information in room, telephone missing from daughter's room, radiator full on, early check-out, double bed too soft (we rolled to the centre). General Review: Hotel was easy to find and had plenty of parking space. We were able to check in early. We were in a new-ish single-storey addition to hotel, which also has some older rooms. Our room was tidy, but lacked information; had to call reception to find out how to phone daughter's room. When I called her room it rang and rang and turned out not to have a phone! Shower was tatty but worked. No bathroom ventilation other than fanlight window. Radiator was full on and room got very hot. Unable to turn it down because valves didn't work. Hotel was aware of this already. Good buffet breakfast. Can't comment on other meals or on the bar. We think 10: 00 am is too early for check-out, but we just made it. 11: 00 am would be much better.

Good Points: The room was extremely spacious (having been given what appeared to be a double room although I was a single traveller) and the bed was very comfortable Bad Points: THe only drawback for me was that the bath had only a hand shower. Also, the cleanliness of the bathroom could have been improved. The sink did not appear to have been cleaned since the prior occupant -- nor the area next to the bath. General Review: Overall, I was extremely impressed and it was very good value for money. We ate in the Bar on arrival for lunch and had an excellent meal. The next morning the breakfast was voluminous (if you wanted it) with your choice of eggs freshly cooked. On all occasions, staff were very friendly -- although I was somewhat surprised to be asked to go to a room next to the reception area to pay my bill on departure as it seemed the lady did not wish to get up from behind her desk. Other than that -- and the bathroom cleanliness -- I was very impressed and, despite the above, will use it again.

I stayed here while on Business nearby. As a lone female, it is often rather uncomfortable to have to sit in a bar and or dine alone. I have to say that this was not the case at The George. Having decided to eat in the bar area, I was made to feel extremely welcome as soon as I entered. The staff were friendly and attentive and made the whole experience far nicer to bear! The bar meals were substantial and not over priced and the quality and presentation were exceptional, in fact far better than some restaurants I have dined in. The staff in general were friendly and helpful and I intend to re-visit this hotel at some point in the future on a personal rather than business visit, in order to spend some time in the village and surrounding areas which were lovely in themselves.
