St James's is an exclusive and expensive area of central London, long associated with royalty, aristocracy and upmarket retailing. Many of its original, grand houses have been converted into offices, but the privileged air of St James's still circulates around its palaces, fine terraces and gentlemen's clubs. The district is framed by Piccadilly, Green Park, The Mall and St James's Park, and Haymarket, and its foremost buildings are the royal residences. St James's Palace, built by Henry VIII, today hosts ceremonial and state events, and is also home to Princess Anne and Princess Alexandra. The neighbouring Clarence House, where the late Queen Mother lived, now accommodates Prince Charles, the Duchess of Cornwall, and princes William and Harry. A short walk away, at the head of The Mall, is Buckingham Palace, which opens up some of its 775 rooms to visitors every summer. Elsewhere, guided tours of The Guards Museum are available, Jermyn Street is notable for its numerous tailors, St James's Street is the place to buy superior wines and Cuban cigars, the King Street area houses Christie's auctioneers, as well as pricey art and antiques shops, and Carlton House Terrace parades some stunning, Grade I-listed architecture by John Nash.
