Rotherham Titans currently play in the National League One of the English League. The team was formed in 1923 and its full name is Rotherham Rugby Union Football Club. The Titans rose from the lower divisions during the early part of the professional era. This was largely thanks to the backing of owner Mike Yarlett, who had bankrolled the club into the Premier Division for the 2003-04 season.
Unfortunately, the Premier dream rapidly turned into a nightmare for Rotherham. The Titans failed to win a game all season and were duly relegated to National League Division One. Mike Yarlett withdrew his financial backing from the team and the result was a very real possibility of extinction for the club.
The team was saved by backing from a consortium of local businesses, supporters and a grant from the local council. The team then received new sponsorship, from which it got the name Titans. Since the relegation Rotherham has managed to consolidate its position in the National League Division One and avoid any further slide downwards.
Recently the team has produced one of England's brightest prospects in David Strettle, although he has now moved to Harlequins RFC.
