Bedford Rugby Union Football Club was formed in 1886 following a merger between Bedford Rovers (founded in 1876) and Bedford Swifts (founded in 1882). The club has traditionally always played in blue and is now known as the Bedford Blues. This is believed to have been a reflection of its early connections with local schools in Bedford and the school masters associations with Oxbridge. The team established itself as a strong team from its earliest days, so much so that it was included on the fixture list for the first ever All Blacks tour in 1905. Like most teams the All Blacks faced, Bedford were soundly beaten. Following World War II, Bedford continued its reputation as a strong club right through into the sixties and seventies. Possibly the high spot of the club's history to date was in 1975 when Bedford beat Rosslyn Park in the final of what is now the EDF Energy Cup. In recent years, Bedford have managed a couple of brief spells in the top flight and have been a consistently strong challenger in the National League Division One. The club has many famous names amongst its notable past players; Martin Offiah, Rudi Straueli and Rory Underwood to name but a few.
