Chester City F.C. was founded in 1885 when Chester Rovers and Old King's Scholars decided to amalgamate. Originally the team was just known as Chester F.C., but changed its name to Chester City F.C. in 1983. The team played only friendlies in its early years, joining the Combination League in 1890. Problems with their home ground caused a temporary halt to operations in 1899-1900, but in 1901 the club relocated to Whipcord Lane. This was the start of a successful period for the club, culminating in the Combination League Championship in 1909, following five consecutive years as runners-up. Chester joined the Football League in 1931 and enjoyed moderate success, finishing in the top ten of Division Three (North) throughout the thirties. Also in the 1930's, the team beat second division Fulham 5-0 in the FA Cup, its best FA Cup win to date, and recorded its highest scoring League win, a 12-0 victory over York City. The late 1990's were a low period for the club which suffered from financial problems and was relegated to the Conference after 69 years in the Football League. Fortunately, the slide in the club's fortunes was soon halted and in 2004 they won the Conference championship and made a return to the Football League.
