London Wasps Holdings Ltd was originally formed as Wasps Football Club in 1867. It was common for Rugby Football to be known as just football in those days, as the distinctions between the Rugby codes and the Association Football code were still being established. Wasps F.C. was formed when Hampstead F.C. became Harlequins F.C. Some members objected to the change and formed the breakaway Wasps club. Wasps were actually founder members of the Football Association, along with Blackheath and several other Rugby Clubs, despite never having properly played the Association version of football. These clubs soon pulled out when it was realised that carrying the ball, tripping and tackling would never be allowed by the Football Association. In 1870 they formed an alternative body, the Rugby Football Union. Wasps would have been a founder member but the team's representative was apparently sent to the wrong place for the meeting. Another version suggests that he had been drunk and this had been the reason for the error. Wasps have been a hugely successful club in the modern era, winning five English Championship titles since 1989 and winning what is now known as the Anglo Welsh or EDF Energy Cup three times.
