It is known that the game of Stow Ball, which is closely related to cricket, had been played in Somerset since at least the 16th century. The earliest confirmed cricket match in Somerset was played on 3 July 1751 to commemorate the late Frederick, Prince of Wales, a noted patron of the sport. Somerset County Cricket Club itself was not formed until 1875. A team of amateurs had travelled to Devon to play a local side and, at a meeting immediately after the game, decided to form the county side. Somerset is, therefore, the only current first-class county to not have been formed at a meeting within its own county borders. Somerset joined the ranks of first-class cricket for a brief spell between 1882 and 1886. In 1890 the County Championship was launched and Somerset rejoined the first-class ranks in time for the 1891 County Championship season. Somerset has never won the County Championship but has had some success in other competitions, having won the Friends Provident Trophy (as it is currently named) three times and the Benson and Hedges Cup twice. Amongst the famous names to appear for Somerset are Sir Ian Botham, Ricky Ponting, Andrew Caddick, Marcus Trescothick and Justin Langer.
