Stockport County F.C. was originally formed in 1883 as Heaton Norris Rovers F.C., who merged shortly after formation with Heaton Norris F.C. In May 1890 the club changed the name to Stockport County F.C. to reflect the fact that Stockport had become a County Borough. Stockport played in The Combination and the Lancashire League, before joining the Football League in 1900 after winning the Lancashire League championship. The early years in the Football League proved tough, with Stockport being dropped out of the league briefly in the early 1900s. Since 1905, however, Stockport has played continuously in the Football League, although most of this time has been spent in the lower two divisions. The 1996-97 season was probably the most successful in the club's history, with a second place finish in Division Two and reaching a run to the semi-final of the League Cup, knocking out three Premiership teams, Blackburn Rovers, Southampton and West Ham United, before losing to Middlesbrough. The club moved to its current home at Edgley Park in 1902, the current stadium holds 10,651 fans. The club nickname is 'The Hatters', reflecting the fact that Stockport was the centre of the Victorian hat trade. The nickname is also shared with Luton Town F.C.
