During Tudor times Greenwich had a riverside royal palace (Placentia). In 1619 it was decided that the old palace could do with a modern house for entertaining the Queen's guests and Inigo Jones introduced a radical new style of building to England influenced by Italian architecture. The Queen's House is elegant and built to a proportional style. Admire the Great Hall, the Orangery and a Loggia overlooking Greenwich Park. Oil paintings, including a famous view by Canaletto, record the Stuart royals and the history of Geenwich.
A set of rooms are set aside for special exhibitions which include a good selection of seascapes and portraits by 18th - 20th century artists.
See also entries for the National Maritime Museum and the Royal Observatory. Greenwich World Heritage Site includes a number of superb attractions and is easily accessed from central London by train, DLR and river cruise.
