Attraction in Yelverton
The Centre is home to the "Broughton Collection", an exhibition of hundreds of hand-crafted glass paperweights. The collection was built up over many years by Mr Bernard Broughton, following his retirement from a business career in London.
His interest in glass paperweights was sparked by the legacy of a beautiful French paperweight. This led to his unique collection of hundreds of glass paperweights which includes pieces from the renowned glassworks of Saint-Louis, Baccarat, Clichy, Whitefriars, Strathern, Caithness, Perthshire and a range of weights of Bohemian, Murano and Chinese origin.
Initially his collection was private, but as it grew he was persuaded to put it on public exhibition. This led to relocation in the present premises at Leg O'Mutton, Yelverton.
Following Bernard's death in 1984, the Paperweight Centre was taken over by Mrs Kay Bolster, who had worked for Bernard since 1978. Kay maintained the collection as a memorial to his vision and enthusiasm until her retirement in 1997. Under Kay's management the exhibition became one of the main attractions of the Dartmoor area, featuring in numerous newspaper and television articles. Visitors and collectors came from Australia, USA, Europe and all parts of the UK to see and enjoy the exhibition.
Today the Centre still attracts many visitors and serious collectors from far and wide and promotes the interest in the fascinating world of glass paperweights.
