Abbot Hall is a jewel of a building in a beautiful setting on the banks of the River Kent, surrounded by a park and overlooked by the ruins of Kendal Castle, which dates back to the early 1200s. This is one of Britain's finest small art galleries and a wonderful place in which to see and enjoy art in the elegantly proportioned rooms of a Grade I Listed Georgian building.
As well as owning a very fine collection of British art, Abbot Hall is highly acclaimed for its stimulating exhibition programme. In recent years the gallery has hosted major exhibitions by leading artists, including retrospectives by Lucian Freud and Bridget Riley.
The permanent collection at Abbot Hall alone is worth a visit. In restored rooms you can view 18th century paintings in their period setting, alongside furniture and objets d'art of the time. There is a collection of society portraits of the day including key works by Reynolds's rival George Romney (1734-1802), who served his apprenticeship in Kendal.
Temporary exhibitions for 2002 include prints by R B Kitaj and Bridget Riley and a major summer show of paintings and drawings by Stanley Spencer. Please visit our website for details of exhibition dates and events.
Opening Times: 10.30am - 5pm Mon-Sat, Apr-Oct, otherwise closes 4pm. Closed Sundays.
