More Information

Merewood is a country house hotel of great charm and distinction set in a position of incomparable scenic beauty. Merewood was built in 1812 for the son of the 1st Earl of Lonsdale. The house was built with stone quarried in the hotel grounds and retains many original features. These include the beautifully panelled hall and reception with its glorious stained glass and magnificent fireplace and the silk-lined drawing room.

The hotel stands in 20 acres of landscaped gardens, woodland and meadow. Terraced gardens fall towards the lake each revealing a new variation of the incomparable view of lake and mountain. Hidden in the woodland is a famously magnificant multi-trunked chestnut. Red and roe deer run freely through the woods and across the terraced lawns and the estate is one of the bastions of the red squirrel.

The hotel overlooks Lake Windermere and is easily accessible from the main route to and through the Lakes. Merewood's friendly and efficient staff, the relaxed excellence of the service and the wonderful food are all of a quality to match the unparalleled location.

The hotel is licensed to hold civil wedding ceremonies and wedding receptions, we also have conference facilities. The Hotel is open all year including Christmas and New Year and the English Tourist Board has awarded it a "Highly Commended" three stars with silver accolade for food and service.
