Sandringham Estate was acquired for Albert Edward, Prince of Wales, later King Edward VII in 1862 as a country retreat. With his wife, Princess Alexandra, he developed housing, schools and farms and in 1870 built the new Sandringham House that stands at the heart of the Estate today. Designed by AJ Humbert and furnished mainly by Holland and Sons, Sandringham was described as 'the most comfortable house in England'. King George V wrote 'dear old Sandringham, the place I love better than anywhere else in the world' and his son King George VI's affection was no less keen. He wrote to Queen Mary 'I have always been happy here and I love the place.'

Sandringham House contains collections of porcelain, bronze sculptures, oriental jade and quartz figures, Russian silver and silver gilt and fine sporting guns together with family portraits and tapestries. The stables and coach houses have been converted into a museum with exhibits of vintage of Royal motor vehicles, estate history and big game trophies. The sixty acres of gardens surrounding the House are famous for rhododendrons, azaleas, camellias and magnolias set amidst wooded glades with many rare and unusual trees. Queen Victoria planted an oak tree in 1889 and plaques commemorate the planting of trees by members of the British, European and Russian Royal Families.
