The Museum occupies a well-preserved Georgian house built in 1753
which is owned by the National Trust and leased to and managed by Launceston
Town Council. It is located in a street described by John Betjeman as
'having the most perfect collection of 18th Century townhouses in Cornwall'
and houses an eclectic collection illustrating the political, economic and
social history of the Launceston area.
There are permanent displays on the history of Launceston, the War Years, Toys (both a museum of toys and toys to play with), the Wise Herbarium, the connection with Launceston Tasmania, astronomer John Couch Adams (who was born at nearby Laneast and discovered the planet Neptune), a Victorian Kitchen, Costume, Agriculture and Local Trade and Industry. The Museum also has a large photographic archive, a coin collection and a collection of fine early 20th century watercolours, by local architect and artist Otho B Peter, of the bridges in the area. Poet Charles Causley was a Launceston man and bequeathed many of his effects to the Museum, which are currently on display.
