Peterborough

Discover Peterborough

Peterborough is a tantalising mix of old and new.

Come to visit our stately homes and magnificent cathedral , soak up some culture, sample our superb shopping and tasty food , and enjoy the great outdoors.

This modern-day city hides a wealth of history just waiting to be uncovered. Visit Flag Fen - where archaeologists found the oldest wheel in Britain –and then fast forward a few centuries to discover our ‘new’ 12th century cathedral with the largest surviving example of a painted wooden ceiling from the Middle Ages.

The museum is the city’s most haunted building – you can join a ghost tour if you dare - and hosts one of the best collections of marine dinosaurs in the world. Or take a trip on one of the steam engines at the Nene Valley Railway and feel yourself transported to a bygone age.

But we’re not just about the past - we’ve got great nightlife , a full programme of national and international events, a lively arts scene and the UK’s biggest undercover beer festival too!

And if you’re a shopaholic, we’ll do you proud. We’re in the UK’s top ten per cent of retail destinations with a modern indoor shopping mall, arcades of traditional shops and a permanent undercover market as well as special continental markets throughout the year.

But don’t forget our natural pleasures. With acres of green open spaces, lakes and riverside parkland , Peterborough is ideal for canoeing, windsurfing, yachting, walking and riding . Or take to two wheels and make the most of our Green Wheel cycle network to cover miles and miles of glorious countryside linking our sleepy stone villages and pretty market towns.

Peterborough is a vibrant modern city that’s proud of its past. Come to enjoy the present and peel back the layers of our ancient heritage.

Getting here is easy – we’re just off the A1(M), close to the A14 and only 45 minutes from London by train, straight into the heart of the city.
