Cleveland Way North Yorks

Location: North Yorkshire.
Length: 177km (110 miles).
Average number of days to complete: 9.
Users: 100% for walkers, 20% available for cyclists and horse riders too.
Highest point: Urra Moor 454m (1,489 ft).
Start point: The cross in Market Square at Helmsley.
Finish point: Filey Brigg, on the coast 11km (7miles) South of Scarborough.
Landscape: Half encircles the largest open moorland in England the rest follows the Heritage Coast on top of rugged cliffs. 80% of the Trail is within the North York Moors National Park.
Highlights: Helmsley Castle, Rievaulx Abbey near Helmsley, Robin Hoods Bay, Whitby Abbey, Staithes Harbour, Captain Cook's monument, Roseberry Topping viewpoint, red grouse.
Famous Associations: Count Dracula, Captain Cook James Herriot.
Trail Officers favourite part: ‘Whitby to Robin Hoods Bay for the coastal views and Osmotherley to Clay Bank in the Cleveland Hills for the openness’.
Nearest towns: 40km (25 miles) north of York, 83km (50 miles) South of Newcastle. Scarborough and Whitby are on the Trail.
Access: York is 2 hours from London 1 hour from Newcastle by train, Malton is 20 minutes from York, catch a bus to Helmsley (30 minutes), or bus direct York to Helmsley. Scarborough is 30 minutes from York change for services to Filey bus or train (10 minutes). Stations also at Whitby and Kildale.
