The village of St John's lies at the heart of Manx history and government. Here, at the grassy, four-tiered Tynwald Hill, the MPs of this self-governing nation hold a sitting every year on July 5 - a national holiday. The Tynwald is believed to be the world's oldest continuous Parliament, with the outdoor ceremony observed for hundreds of years. It begins with a service at the neighbouring St John's Chapel and continues amid scenes of pageantry and celebration including a military band, traditional music and dancing, and a fairground. Beside the church is the small Tynwald Museum, which is only a short walk from the tranquil and beautiful Tynwald National Park, complete with duck pond. The Tynwald Mills & Craft Centre are a popular attraction. Once the location of a thriving weaving industry, this is a shopping centre for local craft and speciality wares, and paintings by Manx artists. St John's is overlooked by the steep, tree-lined Slieau Whallian, nicknamed "Witches' Hill". A little further afield and well worth a visit is the west-coast fishing centre of Peel, whose sandy beach is framed to the east by striking headlands and to the west by the dramatic ruins of Peel Castle.
